Here’s What You Need on Your Nutraceutical and Pharmaceutical Labels

Nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals are some of the fastest growing segments in the label industry. This is great news for you because it means you have a lot of choices when it comes to label design and printing. But before you dive into the creative, find out whether you need the following:

Nutraceutical and Pharmaceutical FDA Label Requirements and Guidelines

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates both nutraceuticals (which they call dietary supplements) and pharmaceuticals in different ways. This means that some or all of the following items may need to be present, depending on your product type and its ingredients:
  1. Your brand name and/or logo
  2. Your company name, address and/or phone number
  3. How many capsules are inside, along with net weight or mg of key ingredient per serving
  4. A statement of identity, aka how your product is intended to be used (like “dietary supplement” or “pain reliever/fever reducer”)
  1. A nutrition fact (serving size, nutrients, vitamins and minerals) or drug fact panel
  2. Ingredient list
  3. Directions, noticeable warnings or usage recommendations
  4. Disclaimers
This is not an exhaustive list and it’s important to consult FDA guidelines to identify exactly what you need. You may also want to leave room for product branding, romance copy, or “about” statements, customer service information, and important logos (non-GMO, organic certification, etc.)

Nutraceuticals vs. Pharmaceuticals: What’s the Difference?

Nutraceuticals are typically edible vitamins, herbal products, nutritional and dietary supplements, and are not registered (or regulated) as drugs. Pharmaceuticals are drugs, and can be sold over-the-counter or by prescription. While nutraceuticals are not tested and regulated like pharmaceuticals are, they should still be labeled in a way that complies with FDA guidelines.

Label Styles, Materials, and Finishes to Consider for Nutraceuticals and Pharmaceuticals

The amount of information you need and want to include will often determine the type of label you need. Here are some common label types in this category:
  • Expanded Content Labels (sometimes called Pull-Out Labels, Multi-Page or Multi-Ply Labels or Booklet Labels) — These are most popular for fitting extended warnings, information or drug fact panels onto your labels without taking up too much space. These labels usually feature a resealable accordion-style booklet that is affixed to your primary component (tube, bottle, etc.) via one panel. They can also be used to accommodate more brand or product information, hidden promotions or coupons, and illustrations or diagrams. Often, these labels are white with black text due to FDA regulation, but you may have more flexibility with a nutraceutical. These labels come with a variety of options, from pressure sensitive to roll-fed, which offers you a full wrap’s worth of content space.
  • Promotional Labels or Instant Redeemable Coupons — These are highly visible and popular on products sold in drugstores, grocery stores, and big box discount stores. They are typically bright in color, removable or replaceable, and coated with plastic for protection. You also may have the option to perforate them for easy removal.
  • High-Gloss, Laminated or Semi-Gloss/Satin Finish Labels — Browse the nutraceuticals or pharmaceuticals at your local provider and you’ll find that most of the labels feature a high-gloss or subtle sheen. This conveys the sleekness that is associated with “medical” or “pharmaceutical-grade” quality. It’s also durable and easy to clean without compromising label quality.
  • Matte Finish Labels — More popular with “natural,” herbal or vitamin products, matte labels allow the label paper and texture to stand out. These types of labels can still be coated with a subtle varnish or laminate for protection against moisture and friction while preserving that matte look.
  • Metallic or Foil Stamped Labels — These labels reflect light, which is a great technique you can use to stand out on shelf.
